Boeing and Far UV Technologies Enter a Licensing Agreement for Ultraviolet Wand Technology
Boeing-developed portable wand will inactivate viruses and bacteria on airplanes.
KANSAS CITY, Mo., October 13, 2020 –Boeing [NYSE: BA] entered into a patent and technology license with Missouri-based Far UV Technologies to manufacture a far ultraviolet (222nm) wand designed to sanitize airplane flight decks and interiors. Boeing designed and developed the technology as part of the company’s Confident Travel Initiative (CTI) to support customers and enhance the safety and well-being of passengers and crew members during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Far UV Technologies will produce and distribute the commercial wand, helping airlines and potentially others combat the coronavirus pandemic. The technology could be available for airlines by the end of 2020.
Using the self-contained, lightweight apparatus, crews can pass far UV light over high-touch surfaces, sanitizing everywhere the light reaches. The far UV wand is particularly effective in compact spaces and sanitizes a flight deck in less than 15 minutes using 222nm UV-C light. Research indicates 222-nanometer UVC inactivates pathogens effectively.
Far UV Technologies, under contract with NASA and the Air Force, has built and utilized one of the the most comprehensive 222nm research, product development, and manufacturing capabilities to deliver game-changing Krypton™ Far UV disinfection ceiling fixture solutions to industry leaders in the healthcare, transportation, defense, education, commercial and industrial markets,” said PJ Piper, President and CEO of Far UV
Technologies, Inc. “We are excited to see more Fortune 50 companies validate and embrace our 222nm technology as a critical, trusted tool in the fight against COVID-19. We are humbled by Boeing’s selection of us to commercialize their important work as we extend our product line into mobile applications. Combining Boeing’s wand with the ones we have been developing for the US Air Force will provide a new level of rapid disinfection capability for more than just our aerospace customers.”
